Apple Confirms September 10th iPhone Launch Event

AppleLaunch300x180

On Tuesday morning, Apple confirmed that it will hold a widely rumored media event next Tuesday, September 10th.

Apple is expected to unveil “something colorful.”

The next-generation iPhone will likely be unveiled on that occasion, nearly one year after Apple’s iPhone 5 reached the mobile masses.

All but outright corroborating the rumored diverse color assortment of the new iPhones, Apple’s invite reads: “This should brighten everyone’s day.”

In recent weeks, supply chain chatter has suggested that the low-cost, entry-level iPhone 5C will also take the stage September 10th.

While Apple is yet to confirm the official launch date of the new iPhone(s), most expect the devices to reach consumers on or before September 28th.

MMW will bring you complete coverage next Tuesday as the Apple event gets underway.

Smartphone market share in 2015: 1. Google, 2. Microsoft, 3. Apple, 4. BB

According to Gartner, Microsoft Windows Phone 7 will overtake Apple iOS market share by 2015. Android will control nearly 50% of the mobile smartphone market within two years.

Gartner predicts Android will jump from 38.5% market share this year to 49.2% in 2012. That’s more than double its 2010 market share.

It also predicts that Apple share has peaked at 19.4% and will begin dropping. Windows Phone will surpass it by 2015. An amazing prediction based on Microsoft’s recent deal with Nokia.

BlackBerry is fading, dropping from 13.4% this year to 11.1% by 2015. So, place your bets everyone…

Amazon Cloud Player to stream all your music to Android phones

Media_httpwwwblogcdnc_wfrvd

This is big news. One of the primary reasons people like me wouldn’t, up to now, switch from iTunes, is that my iPhone is also my music player. I have hundreds of songs on it and if couldn’t take that with me to a new Android phone that was a deal killer.

Now, I can upload ALL my music to the new Amazon cloud and stream it to an Android phone. I will wait on the reviews to see how smoothly the service works, but that combined with the fact that I cannot reliably use my AT&T iPhone service even in downtown San Francisco may compel me to finally make the switch.

So I’ll be carefully evaluating the Android phones (and Windows Phone) against a new Verizon iPhone. This is a big step in the right direction.

UPDATE: Reviews are coming in and they are extremely positive.

Mobile coupons on the mobile web. No app required.

Insequent has just launched version 1.1 of its mobile platform for local businesses. This version drastically expands the coupon engine so that they are now redeemable by the consumer and trackable by the merchant.

A consumer texts the merchant keyword (e.g. “zunicafe”) to 55411 and they instantly receive a link to Zuni’s mobile website. Click the Coupon button to find great deals you can redeem at the point of sale. You can also forward to your friends and share on Facebook and Twitter.

This is a great alternative to Groupon and all of its clones for a business to have total control over their deals every step of the way. Coming soon we will distribute these coupons across the entire Deal universe via XML feed.

Gartner: Android Now Second Most Popular OS Worldwide

And IPhone passed RIM. Symbian, the leader everywhere but the US thanks to Nokia, is down 10%. Look out below.

Gartner also said that global mobile phone sales totaled 417 million units in the third quarter of 2010, a 35 percent increase from the third quarter of 2009. Smartphone sales grew 96 percent from the third quarter last year, and smartphones accounted for 19.3 percent of overall mobile phone sales in the third quarter of 2010.

How Google’s Android Could Overtake Apple’s iPhone

I’ve been harping on this for some time now. Great article on Barron’s:

“There are other reasons why Android is gaining momentum. Many Silicon Valley veterans envision Apple’s repeating the mistakes it made during the rollout of its first personal computers, when it chose to keep a closed proprietary system over a more pervasive operating system pushed by IBM (IBM), Microsoft (MSFT) and Intel (INTC). The WinTel collaboration took Apple to the brink of bankruptcy, and some fear that Apple is going down the same path with the iOS. “Android attacks Apple at its weakest point, which is its walled-garden ecosystem,” warns Snyder.”

With Google as Partner, Verizon May Not Need iPhone

It is starting to look like a Verizon iPhone may be more than a ways off. Seems Google and Verizon are getting very cozy. I personally have major problems with Apple’s ‘walled garden’ (we need to protect you from yourself) approach and hope that “open” wins. If someone can name me one time the walled garden has prevailed I will surrender but I don’t see it lasting. Just another phase of the (r)evolution.

That’s too bad. Hopefully they will get this worked out and hopefully it will become a standard across all phones. That, plus the antenna, plus ATT will keep me from upgrading.
